The following video provides a simple tool for metaphor construction. It will remind you of the technique we discussed in the workshop. The illustrations that follow provide real world examples of how metaphors lace our communication.
Simple instructions for metaphors can be found on the tutorials page of the website. Below is a great video from TED on metaphors, by James Geary. If you want to learn more (a great deal more) about metaphors and how to use them, visit his website.
This next example concerns using images to convey meaning (image as metaphor) and how you can enrich your presentations with fewer slides when you choose great images. It requires some work to find the right images, but there are huge payoffs in communication effectiveness.
Chris Jordan is an artist and conservationist. He takes image making to the creative limits with his original works of art. In the video take note of how he uses the images to metaphorically (and factually) convey powerful ideas about conservation.
He is always creating something new and his projects are inventive, intelligent, and convey a sense of wonder about our world. Visit his website for more.
